Hot Berry Punch

Wishing you all a wonderful and Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season!

Hot Berry Punch

This Punch warms you up even on the coldest winter’s day and is a traditional drink offered at the numerous "Christkindlmärkte" (Christmas markets) in Vienna.

It really tastes, as I once read, like Christmas in a glass.
People get together at these Christkindlmaerkte at the evening and often there are live concerts offering typical Austrian Christmas music.

The whole atmosphere is very festive, especially at the smaller, not so crowded markets and the smell of mulled wine, orange and berry punch and gingerbread fills the air.

The little ones enjoy their children’s punch and gingerbread or Christmas cookies.
Most of the Christmas tree decoration is painstaking hand made patisserie like this adorable Santa and the tiny angel made from meringue. Nearly too cute to eat, don't you think?

For the Berry Punch you need:
500ml (2 1/2 cups) red wine
150 ml (1 cup) cranberrie juice
120g (4.2 ounces) caster sugar
1 stick cinnamon
1 whole glove
250 g (8 ounces) mixed berries (like blueberries, rasberries, blackberries), frozen
1/2 teaspoon of marzipan

Preparation:
Place the red wine ,cranberry juice, sugar and spices in a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
Once boiling reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Carefully strain the hot mixture and transfer to a heatproof punch bowl or mug. Dissolve the marzipan in the hot punch and add the defrosted berries.
Garnish with an orange peel.
Enjoy!

  1. I'm sure this drink is wonderful. I love mulled wine. And I would love to wander around this Austrian market. It would be a great experience and such a contrast to how we celebrate Christmas in Sydney. Merry Christmas to you and all your family.

  10. Hi. And how do you make a rum kirchen punch? You just add rum? Or you substitute wine with the rum?? :) great recipe and I look forward to making it this Christmas. I was in Vienna at Saturday and tried it and now it is my must have on Christmas list. :)

  11. Hi Zofia,
I've never made a rumkirschen punch myself, but a friend gave me this recipe. Hope you will enjoy it.
    1 jar Sauerkirschen
    0.75l white wine
    1l cherry juice
    1 cinnamon stick
    4 cloves
    O.5l cherry liqueur
    200ml dark rum
    1-2 spoonful sugar
Heat all ingredients except for the cherry liqueur and the rum, but do not boil the liquid.
Then add rum and cherry liqueur and heat the
    mixture but fd not boil.
Discard cinnamon and cloves and serve hot.
